No. 3 Mohawk girls back on track

The third-ranked (Class 4A) Mason City girls snapped out of a mini-slump in a big way against Fort Dodge on Friday.

University of Iowa recruit Megan Meyer scored 22 points as the Mohawks posted a 73-21 victory over the Dodgers in the FDSH gym.

Mason City (9-3 overall), which had dropped consecutive games to Top-5 Class 5A opponents West Des Moines Valley and Johnston to begin the new year, racked up 32 first-quarter points and led 53-15 by halftime. The Mohawks’ full-court pressure and fast-paced offensive attack was simply too much for the Dodgers to handle.

Fellow starters Anna Deets and Jaeda Whitner both scored in double figures for MCHS, which shot 54 percent from the field. Meyer was 9-for-13 overall, and Whitner drilled three first-period three-point baskets.

Aleaha Pommer knocked down a pair of buckets in the first quarter for Fort Dodge, and led the team in scoring. The Dodgers misfired on all 16 of their three-point tries and made only nine field goals in all.

FDSH was facing its fourth Top-5 foe in the last five games.

The Dodgers will be off for a week and return to action on Friday against Marshalltown at 6:15 p.m.
