Lara wins at Loras Open

DUBUQUE — Four former Fort Dodge Senior High wrestling standouts were in action here Saturday at the Loras Open.

Triston Lara, Drew Bennett and Cayd Lara all competed for the University of Northern Iowa, with fellow ex-Dodger Sam Cook wrestling for the University of Iowa.

“It was awesome having so many kids from the same high school all competing at the next level,” Lara said. “Seeing my old teams, whether on my team or not, excel at this level is not only exciting, but I think it also motivates each and every one of us to do better.”

Lara won the 149-pound bracket, topping Iowa’s Zach Axmear in the finals with a fall in 1:54. The two-time state champion was 5-0 on the day, also earning two major decisions and another pin.

“I felt really good out there,” Lara said. “It feels really good getting back to my old self and competing hard.”

Bennett, a one-time state champion, reached the finals at 133 pounds with teammate Jack Wagner, and the two did not square off. He was 3-0 with a fall and a win via major decision.

Cook put together a 3-1 tournament, falling to Wisconsin’s Beau Breske in the championship match at 197 pounds. A two-time state champion, Cook had a fall and a technical fall.

Cayd Lara placed fifth at 157 pounds, going 4-2.
