Gaels can’t stop No. 2 Clear Lake

The St. Edmond boys made it tough on second-ranked (Class 3A) Clear Lake here Friday night.

In the end, though, the size and depth of the Lions proved too much, as they remained unbeaten with a 79-61 victory inside the Gael gym.

Senior Andrew Gibb led all scorers with 32 points, as St. Edmond (7-8 overall, 5-5 in North Central Conference) played its second consecutive game down two starters who were suspended for violating team rules.

Gibb recorded his fourth straight game with over 30 points, eclipsing that mark for the ninth time on the season. He has now scored 246 points over his last seven games.

“Clear Lake is just a very good, very talented, very deep team,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “I was brought of the way we scrapped with them. We can’t match up in terms of size, but I thought we matched their hustle and intensity.”

Drew Enke paced a balanced attack by the Lions (16-0, 10-0) with 15 points. Tate Storbeck added 13, with both Cameron Toebe and Jack Barragy scoring 11 each.

Clear Lake knocked down nine 3-pointers on the night and finished 31 of 54 from the field. That included a 10-for-13 start in the first quarter as they built a 24-16 advantage.

“It’s just so hard to match the overall talent they put out on the floor,” Kochendorfer said. “That, and they are all really big, athletic kids.”

St. Edmond rallied back in the second quarter, as Cael Kolacia scored four and Charlie Shelly added a three-pointer of his own off the bench. The Gaels were able to cut the deficit to four on a triple by Gibb, but would get no closer the rest of the way.

Gibb had 19 in the first half, adding five rebounds and three steals. Mitchell Rasmussen recorded six rebounds and four assists, with Jed Tracy also dishing out four assists.

“I thought Mitchell played a great game, really battling for loose balls,” Kochendorfer said. “Cael gave us some good minutes, Charlie hit a big shot, Brock Stanek came in and provided us good minutes. With Jerris Duncan out (due to a shoulder injury) we are going to need guys to step up.”

St. Edmond returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Humboldt.
