Dodgers lead in Illinois

GENESEO, Ill. — The fifth-ranked (Class 3A) Fort Dodge wrestling team made the most of Friday’s long trip here to the Geneseo Invitational, taking a first day lead and advancing six into the semifinals.

The Dodgers enter action Saturday with a lead in the team standings over fellow Iowa schools Cedar Rapids Prairie and Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

Lane Cowell, Drake Ayala, Carson Taylor, Brooks Cowell, Drevon Ross and Logan Finowski all advanced to the semifinals with wins in the opening rounds.

Ayala, the top-ranked 113-pounder in Class 3A, earned a pair of falls in the second round and quarterfinals after receiving a bye. Taylor, rated fourth at 120, pinned his two opponents to reach the final four.

Ross, ranked seventh at 138 and coming off a victory over No. 3 Cody Anderson of Waukee Thursday night, claimed pins in 48 and 37 seconds in his two matches.

Finowski earned a pair of decisions at heavyweight.

Dreyzon Phillips, Kody Cook, Savion Wheat, Kaden Smith and Austin Lee all remain alive on the consolation side.

Action continues at 9:30 a.m.
