No. 1 Ayala wins showdown

RUNNELLS — For the second time in three days, top-ranked Southeast Polk flexed its muscle on the wrestling mats, earning a 50-20 victory over Fort Dodge.

On Tuesday, the Rams handled No. 3 Waukee, 69-6.

The Dodgers, the defending state champions, picked up wins courtesy of Drake Ayala, Carson Taylor, Drevon Ross and Logan Finowski on the night.

Ayala, the top-ranked wrestler at 113 pounds and a defending state runner-up, handled No. 2 Devin Harmison, earning a technical fall, 18-3.

“He (Drake) went out and got the job done,” said Fort Dodge head coach Bobby Thompson. “Nice to see him get the tech fall against a kid that was being defensive and Drake just dominated him.”

Ross, who is currently rated eighth at 145 pounds, pinned No. 5 Ryan Strickland in the third period, finishing the match at 4:36.

Taylor, ranked third, claimed a fall vs. Cael Jones in just 89 seconds. Joel Jesuroga, rated fifth for the Rams at 120, did not wrestle.

“He (Drevon) gutted it out, after trailing 8-0,” Thompson said. “He got a drop on him and picked up the fall.

“Carson is getting the job done and wrestling at a high pace.”

Finowski, a heavyweight, went to the ultimate-tiebreaker to finish off the night with a 3-2 victory over Connor Brown.

“Logan got the big win,” Thompson said. “He is starting to get some leg attacks and winning some tight matches.”

Brooks Cowell, ranked eighth at 126, dropped an 8-5 decision to No. 7 Carter Martinson, while Dreyzon Phillips lost a close 8-6 decision to No. 8 Camden Baarda at 132.

“I thought some of our other guys wrestled well,” Thompson said. “Dreyzon (Phillips), Kody (Cook) and Austin (Lee) had some growth in their matches.”

Carter Forbes and Kaden Lynch scored wins for the Dodger junior varsity, with Lynch picking up a fall.

Fort Dodge will make its home debut this Saturday, hosting the Don Miller Invitational.
