DOUBLE TROUBLE

Nicole Muhlenbruch knows that opposing teams will focus on taking Taylor McKinney away as the season progresses.

But Muhlenbruch is very confident in the others around McKinney stepping up on those nights.

Friday, it was Grace Hoversten and Zoey Woodle, as the two combined for 23 points to lead Webster City to a 38-28 victory over St. Edmond inside the Gael gym.

Hoversten, a 6-foot junior, scored 13 points with 12 rebounds and two blocked shots, while Woodle added 10 points, including five in the fourth as the Lynx (2-3 overall, 1-1 in North Central Conference) snapped a two-game losing skid.

“We know that every team is going to face guard and double team Taylor,” Muhlenbruch said. “Some kids came in and stepped up and that’s what you need from your team. Winning is about the team.”

For St. Edmond (0-4, 0-2), Erin Flattery, Jocy Timmerman and Cambrie McBride all scored six points each, with Macey Mason adding five and seven rebounds.

The Gaels, making their home debut, jumped out to an early lead, and even held a 22-21 advantage entering the fourth. But it was Webster City that found its rhythm over the final eight minutes, outscoring SEHS, 17-6.

“We just played a little too tight there at the end,” St. Edmond head coach Steve Neuberger said. “We’ve had some games like that this year, and I think once we get past those issues, we are going to have a lot of success. But first, we have to overcome that.”

McKinney, who entered the night averaging almost 24 points, was held without a field goal, sinking two free throws in the final minutes. Abby Landwehr, a multi-time state cross country and track qualifier, was the primary defender on McKinney much of the evening.

“Abby did a great job on Taylor,” Neuberger said. “We had her guard her last year and she kept her in check as well. We were going to make someone else beat us, and Webster City got that from other players.”

St. Edmond was held scoreless for over six minutes of the fourth, as the Lynx received buckets from three different players during that stretch.

Next action for the Gaels will be Tuesday when they travel to Algona. Webster City hosts Clear Lake that same night.
