Algona stays unbeaten with win over Gaels

ALGONA — The St. Edmond girls battled back from a 15-point deficit to make a run at No. 6 (Class 3A) Algona here Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs, though, were able to remain unbeaten, posting a 57-45 victory.

Abbey Holmes led Algona (5-0 overall, 3-0 in NCC) with 15 points, while Molly McCauley added 13.

Three players reached double figures for the Gaels (0-5, 0-3) as both Jocy Timmerman and Jacque Oberg scored 11. Erin Flattery added 10 points.

“We had really good ball movement in the fourth, making the extra pass and knocking down shots,” SEHS head coach Steve Neuberger said. “We know the girls are capable of doing that, but for whatever reason, we just haven’t over the first four games.”

St. Edmond outscored AHS in the fourth, 17-14.

“They made 10 three-pointers and we didn’t do a good enough job of sticking with their shooters,” Neuberger said. “We had a few too many silly turnovers, but we did a nice job of taking away their inside play.”

St. Edmond remains on the road as they head to face second-ranked Clear Lake on Friday night. The Lions stretched their NCC win streak to 22 with a 60-27 victory over Webster City.

Algona hosts Iowa Falls-Alden on Friday.
