No. 6 Tritons knock off NIACC in league action

Luke Moffitt was able to look at Wednesday night’s ICCAC dual between Iowa Central and North Iowa Area with an extended outlook.

The sixth-ranked Tritons scored a 29-14 victory to improve to 2-0 in conference action, but Moffitt knows that the overall performance was not one to duplicate later in the year when the pressure picks up.

“We’re battling some injuries and illness, and guys are still trying to figure out where they will fit in,” Moffitt said. “We showed some good aggressive wrestling at times, but we still left too many bonus points out there. Those are the things that will come back to haunt you in critical situations.”

Seventh-ranked Kevin Radcliff opened the dual with a major decision, while former Fort Dodge Senior High medalist Damond Lockner and Yar Aldiva added decisions to make it 10-5.

Russ Jennett and Clarion-Goldfield/Dows graduate Reymundo Vasquez each earned forfeits for the Tritons around a decision by NIACC’s Julian Giustiniano, with Brian Stanford claiming a major decision at 184 pounds to put the dual out of reach.

Stanford recorded seven takedowns against Reldon Miller, as Iowa Central had 16 takedowns on the night to eight by the Trojans. The Tritons also had a 9-6 advantage in bonus points, with Amari Latimer finishing things off with a decision at heavyweight.

This was the second-to-last home action for Iowa Central, as they host Iowa Lakes on Wednesday, Jan. 16. These two teams will also meet again that month in Mason City.

“It was good for us to get wins at certain weights because we might need those head-to-head tiebreakers depending on who wrestles who at regionals,” Moffitt said. “We’ve still got work to do, but it’s still the first semester and there is a long way to go.”

NIACC will also be the host school for the Region XI Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 10. The Tritons return to action on Saturday in Storm Lake at the Buena Vista Open.
