All-state volleyball honors for area trio

A trio of area players were named all-state by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association for their efforts this past fall on the volleyball court.

In Class 3A, Morgan Middleton of Clarion-Goldfield/Dows was placed on the third team, with Humboldt’s Jori Hajek earning honorable mention status. Newell-Fonda’s Olivia Larsen was also named honorable mention in 1A.

Middleton led the Cowgirls to a 27-9 record and spot in the state tournament. She was tops on the team with 438 kills, averaging 4.7 per set, along with serving at 95 percent with 37 aces.

The 6-foot sophomore also had 33 total blocks and 160 digs. Middleton ranked third overall in 3A in kills.

Hajek, a 10th-grader, helped the Wildcats finish as tri-North Central Conference champions with Clarion-Goldfield/Dows and Iowa Falls-Alden. She had 245 kills, 27 aces, served 96 percent and recorded 249 digs.

Larsen, a senior for the Mustangs, had a team-high 266 kills this year and 47 aces, 343 digs and 18 blocks.

The IGCA also named players of the year, with West Des Moines Valley’s Madi Kubik taking home top honors in 5A, Aliyah Carter from Western Dubuque in 4A, Sommer Daniel of Tipton in 3A, Unity Christian’s Corrina Timmermans in 2A and Bree Thompson of Janesville earning the award in 1A.

Matt Johnson, a graduate of Fort Dodge Senior High, was named the 5A Coach of the Year after leading Cedar Falls to the state championship match.
