Tritons lose home rugby match

The Iowa Central rugby team dropped a 43-21 decision to Davenport University here on Saturday.

Facing a squad two levels above their classification, the Tritons fought back from a 19-0 halftime deficit before the Panthers pulled away.

“I thought we played well for the most part,” ICCC head coach Brent Nelson said. “Davenport is a very solid Div. I-A program who came all the way from Grand Rapids (Mich.) to face us, which is a good sign for the name we’re making for ourselves as a program.

“Our guys played hard and stepped up. We just had a really bad 10-minute stretch after getting within 19-14 in the second half that cost us.”

Ezra Ulberg, Mike Wildin and Chris Karamitros scored for the Tritons, who were without two starters. Gareth Sanders-Crook played all 80 minutes on Saturday and led the way with nine tackles.

“We obviously have plenty we need to work on,” Nelson said. “But that’s why we’re playing such a tough schedule — it makes us better. We’re not losing. We’re learning.

“We can’t thank our home crowd enough for their support.”

Iowa Central returns to the field on Saturday at Big Ten member Wisconsin — another Div. I-A foe — for a 1 p.m. start.
