Tritons top ranked foe in opener

EAST PEORIA, Ill. — The ninth-ranked Iowa Central volleyball team opened their season with a victory over No. 16 Illinois Central here Wednesday.

Scores were 25-15, 20-25, 25-12 and 25-10.

Amaya Finley had 16 kills in her Triton debut, with Libby Zorn adding 11 and Kayla Faldet nine. Asarar Gony had eight kills and Abby Lohrmann recorded 42 assists.

“With so much experience on this team, we really wanted to challenge our players with some tough opponents right out of the gate,” ICCC head coach Sara Horn said. “I really like how this team rose to the challenge and played a really clean, efficient match to open up the year. I thought we made some really high level plays, and it’s great to see this team start to put the pieces together.

“We have a lot of high expectations for ourselves and our players took some big steps in the right direction.”

Iowa Central finished with nine aces, including five by Karolayne Santos. Hannah Murray had 21 digs, Lohrmann 20 and Faldet seven blocks.

The Tritons compete in the Waubonsee Invitational Friday and Saturday.
