Gaels win twice on the road

JEFFERSON — The St. Edmond volleyball team opened the season with a sweep over Greene County and Perry here Thursday night.

The Gaels swept Perry (25-17, 25-23) and earned a three-set victory over Greene County (26-24, 15-25, 15-9).

Leading the way for St. Edmond (2-0 overall) was Josie Huss with 14 kills and seven aces, serving a perfect 21-for-21 on the night. Jacque Oberg had 30 assists, two kills and an ace.

Macey Mason chipped in with 18 digs and six aces, serving 12 of 13, and Rylee Kinney had 12 digs and an ace. Chloe Lewison and Cambrie McBride recorded six kills each, and Devyn Scott added five.

“We started out with a super-quiet gym so we need to show some excitement and play with more energy right from the start,” SEHS head coach Dee Huss said. “Overall, a win is a win and I am glad to see the girls battle in those close sets and come out on top. We just have to do a better job of executing on our out of system of balls.”

“I thought Kacey (Kruthoff), Sydney (Engels), Milena (Naughton) and Isabel (Woodhouse) also did nice jobs for us when we made some rotation changes.”

St. Edmond also won the junior varsity matches, topping Perry (25-18, 25-11) and Greene County (25-21, 15-25, 15-11).

Next action for the Gaels will be this weekend when they host their own invitational inside the SEHS gym with Bishop Garrigan, Pocahontas Area, Southeast Valley, Webster City and Aplington-Parkersburg all in attendance.

Play begins at 8:30 a.m. in the round-robin tournament.
