Miller, Dodgers honored by CIML

Fort Dodge’s Drake Miller earned first team all-CIML Iowa Conference baseball honors, the league announced recently.

Miller’s teammates, Shane Halligan and Drew Callon, were both placed on the second team, with Nate Scherff, Mason Bockoven and Lucas Williamson earning honorable mention status.

Johnston, which won the conference title with a 14-3 record, had five first team selections. Urbandale, the league runner-up, Marshalltown and the Dragons all qualified for the Class 4A state tournament.

Miller, a junior, led the Dodgers with a .400 batting average, 36 RBI, five homers, 24 walks and 42 hits. He also posted a .676 slugging percentage and a .540 on-base, recording a 5-1 record on the mound.

“Drake had an outstanding year for us hitting out of the No. 3 spot,” FDSH head coach Blake Utley said. “He was a true leader for us on the field and had all the respect of the coaches in the conference. He was a no-brainer first team selection.”

Halligan hit .333 with 30 RBI, five homers, nine doubles and drew 18 walks. The sophomore had a .581 slugging percentage and a .458 on-base.

In the regular season finale, Halligan pitched a complete-game one-hitter vs. Ames, striking out four.

“Shane was another kid that had all the respect of the coaches in our league,” Utley said. “He had a huge year for us at the plate and calling the shots at catcher. He is a high-effort guy and a workhorse that I am glad is on our team.”

Callon scored 28 runs with 33 hits, six doubles, drove in 11 and had nine steals. The junior recorded a .426 on-base percentage and had a team-high 44 strikeouts on the mound.

“Drew did a nice job as our leadoff hitter, played a great outfield and took the mound when we asked him to,” Utley said. “It was perfect for him to be selected as a utility player because that was what he did for us — a little bit of everything.”

Scherff had 35 hits and scored 25 runs, driving in 10. Bockoven had 28 hits, including six doubles, and Williamson drove in 13 with 24 hits and 19 runs scored.

“Nate took that jump in the offseason from his junior year to his senior season,” Utley said. “He gave us a chance to win in every game he pitched, and as a senior, he wanted the ball against the best in our conference.

“Lucas really improved throughout the year, and Mason was one of three sophomores who played for us. I’m excited to have both of them back.”

Miller, Halligan, Callon, Bockoven and Williamson will all return next summer for Utley, as just Scherff, Kade Solverson, Drew Zimmermann and Tyler Meriweather graduated.
