Gaels open vs. WB-M in Algona

ALGONA — The St. Edmond baseball team opens their postseason journey here Tuesday against West Bend-Mallard in a Class 1A, District 3 contest.

First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Bishop Garrigan.

The Gaels (11-10 overall) closed out the regular season last Monday with a 4-0 victory over Hampton-Dumont, snapping a three-game losing skid.

St. Edmond went 7-4 over its final 11 games, including wins vs. Pocahontas Area, Humboldt and Iowa Falls-Alden.

Senior Jake Szalat is likely to earn the start on the mound after going 6-1 with 53 strikeouts in just over 43 innings pitched. Szalat allowed just four earned run and 27 hits this year.

Jack McEvoy, Jeremiah Wheeler, Connor Bocken, Noah Carlson and Cael Kolacia all have double-digit runs driven in this year, with Kolacia leading the team with 17 hits.

Szalat has drawn 23 walks against just three strikeouts at the plate, adding nine RBI and two doubles.

The Wolverines (6-14) are led by Cole Hoskins and Danie Riesenberg, who have a combined 24 RBI. Hoskins has seven doubles.

Thad Fogarty is 2-4 with 35 strikeouts and a 4.94 earned run average for West Bend-Mallard.

The winner squares off with either Bishop Garrigan or Storm Lake St. Mary’s back here on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
