St. Edmond handles Cowboys

CLARION — St. Edmond senior Jake Szalat pitched and hit the Gaels past Clarion-Goldfield/Dows on Friday night.

The Gaels (4-5 overall, 2-3 North Central Conference) picked up a 4-0 shutout behind Szalat’s three-hitter.

Szalat improved to 3-0, walking none and striking out nine. He was also 2-for-3 at the plate with a double.

“Jake has gotten better with every outing,” said St. Edmond head coach Mike Szalat. “His curve ball was good and he hit his spots.

“We’ve been spotting our younger guys in to take care of our arms.”

Connor Bocken, Jack McEvoy, Jeremiah Wheeler and Jackson Kochendorfer all had RBI.

“Clarion has gotten better the last few year,” Szalat said. “It’s nice to get a win on the road. We are inexperience, but anytime you can get a win is big.”

The Gaels travel to Webster City on Monday. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.
