DES MOINES — Dominick Etherington had one final throw left in his high school career to make something happen.

And Etherington did just that.

The Algona senior launched the discus over 61 feet to secure the Class 3A state title on Friday, surging past Solon’s Tyler Linderbaum, who had led the event throughout.

Etherington, who placed 10th in the shot put on Thursday, more than redeemed himself before he heads off to South Dakota State University to continue his career.

“I knew I needed a big throw,” Etherington said in an interview with Algona Radio. “I was down and just said, ‘Dom, this is the last time throwing in high school and you have to end it right.’

“There was so much adrenaline going and I just bombed it. It felt really good and is the ultimate memory.”

Etherington’s classmate, Austin Chase, secured a medal in the 400 hurdles, placing fourth in 54.29. He also ran on the distance medley that secured sixth for the Bulldogs.

Sammonte Bawden, who qualified in the 100 and 200 finals that will take place Saturday, Skyler Groen and Trey Engen completed the medley, which clocked a time of 3:35.43 to win the first heat.

Algona’s 4×200 of Sam Hood, Alexa Chase, Abby Groen and Sydney Hoover were 18th in 1:49.31.

In the final race of the day inside Drake Stadium, the Humboldt 4×400 relay of Jamison Heinz, Cale Hundertmark, Matt Miller and Denny Pederson secured a spot in the finals by running 3:25.35.

That time was good for sixth-best out of the prelims and set a new personal record. They were second in the third heat.

Heinz also finished 13th in the long jump (20-5.25) and Miller was 22nd (19-0.5). The distance medley relay of Rachel Darling, Mady Lange, Gabby Kent and Bryce Gidel placed 19th in 4:26.34.

Webster City had five events place in the Top-15, led by the 4×200 of Garrett Whitmore, Zane Williams, Carson Struchen and Lincoln LaSourd, as they were ninth in 1:32.10. The group just missed out on a medal, as Glenwood finished eighth in 1:32.02.

Cassidy Nerland, a runner-up in the discus on Thursday, was 10th in the shot put (36-9), with Ashlyn Hay settling for 11th in the long jump (14-6.25).

James Cherry finished 14th in the discus (48-5.5), and Whitmore was 14th in the 400 hurdles (56.88).
