THE SECOND SEASON

Area athletes in pursuit of district invitations

Messenger photo by Britt Kudla Joey Busse of Humboldt wrestles at the North Central Conference meet. Busse is ranked ninth in Class 2A at 145 pounds heading into Saturday’s sectional action.

Wrestlers hit the mats around the area on Saturday in the first of two state-qualifying segments.

Five different sectional meets sites will welcome area programs. Action begins at noon.

The champion and runner-up in each weight class advances to next Saturday’s district round.

In Lake Mills, St. Edmond will be joined by Eagle Grove, Belmond-Klemme, Mason City Newman, West Fork and West Hancock.

Leading the way for the Gaels are senior Jake Szalat, sophomore Noah Carlson and freshman Ryan Duckett, as all three have over 10 wins each.

Those qualifiers advancing from the Lake Mills sectional will compete with Sectional 5 qualifiers in Manson. That sectional includes East Sac County, Emmetsburg, Manson Northwest Webster, North Union and West Bend-Mallard.

Area wrestlers in the latest rankings include Manson Northwest Webster’s Donavon Hanson (No. 5, 106 pounds) and Enrique Maravilla (No. 2, 285); Eagle Grove’s Derek Graham (No. 6, 113); and Spencer Griffin (No. 7, 138) of Emmetsburg.

In 2A, Humboldt will host several fellow North Central Conference teams and three more out of the Twin Lakes Conference. Joining the Wildcats will be Algona, Clarion-Goldfield/Dows, Pocahontas Area, South Central Calhoun and Southeast Valley.

Ranked grapplers from the area programs include Pocahontas Area’s Jacob Mielke (No. 6, 106), Shea Ruffridge (No. 2, 126); Remington Hanson (No. 10, 113), Tanner Abbas (No. 2, 145), Reymundo Vasquez (No. 9, 160), Mason Carpenter (No. 7, 170) and Spencer Trenary (No. 5, 285); Humboldt’s Joey Busse (No. 9, 145); Algona’s Dominick Etherington (No. 4, 285); and defending state runner-up Kyler Fisher (No. 2, 182) of Southeast Valley.

Ruffridge finished fourth at state last February, and has signed to wrestle at Grand View University. Trenary was third and Abbas fourth.

Webster City heads to Ballard with the host Bombers, Collins-Maxwell, Gilbert, Nevada and West Marshall. The Lynx and Bombers are both ranked and feature 10 rated individuals, including top-ranked heavyweight Cooper Lawson.

Other wrestlers ranked for WCHS include defending state runner-up Drake Doolittle (No. 3, 120), Carson Hartnett (No. 8, 132), Luke Rohmiller (No. 9, 152), Zane Williams (No. 8, 170) and James Cherry (No. 6, 220).
