URBANDALE — For years, Fort Dodge boys basketball coach Tom Daniel has been driven to improve the culture and expectations surrounding his program.

Daniel reached a significant personal milestone on Friday as his Dodgers blistered Urbandale, 66-45. It was a fitting performance to secure a milestone win for the coach, given Fort Dodge played with what Daniel hopes is becoming a trademark tenacity on both ends of the court.

Four Dodgers scored in double figures to solidify Daniel’s 93rd career victory, which moves him into second on the program’s all-time list. In his 10th season, Daniel moved past one Hall of Famer — Connie Goodman (92 in 12 years) — and into a position held by another, Dutch Huseman (190 in 15 years).

”It’s really a credit to my staff and the kids I’ve had here more than anything else,” Daniel said. ”You can plot the course, but everyone around you has to buy in. Thankfully, my assistants and some terrific young men have done just that.

”We’re by no means exactly where we want to be, but I feel like as a program, we’re getting there. We’ve had some really good groups who have helped right the ship. When you talk Fort Dodge basketball, names like Dutch Huseman and Connie Goodman are among the very first you think of. I have so much respect for both of their families, so to even be mentioned (in their presence) because of this is truly an honor.”

Senior guard Malcolm Clayton had 17 points on Friday for the Dodgers (9-7 overall, 5-4 in the CIML Iowa Conference), who prevailed on the road for the second time this week. Junior Jordan Jackson (14 points), sophomore Tysen Kershaw (12) and senior Trey Mosley (11) also reached double figures for FDSH.

The Dodgers jumped ahead 39-25 by halftime, then held the J-Hawks (7-10, 3-6) to four points in the third quarter to extend their lead to 21.

”This was as complete a game as we’ve played in a while,” Daniel said. ”We shared the basketball and spread out the scoring. We created offense with our defense.

”It was a special, high-energy effort on their senior night.”

Fort Dodge struggled with the J-Hawks at home earlier this season, pulling out a 39-35 win. On Friday, the Dodgers had 39 points in the first half alone.

”I really want to thank the administration for being patient with me through the years,” Daniel said. ”They took a chance on a kid from Chicago, and continued to support what we’re doing here through some difficult moments early in my tenure.

”My family has also been incredible. I really want to thank them, and the Dodger community for being loyal to our program. Again, we have a lot of work still to do, but these are good kids who represent our program in a positive way both on and off the court. I consider myself very fortunate to be their coach.”

Fort Dodge returns to action with another road tilt on Saturday at Waterloo West (11-5). The Warhaks upset fourth-ranked Cedar Falls last night, 65-64.
