No. 5 Lions too much for SE girls

Last month, the St. Edmond girls were hit hard by fifth-ranked (Class 3A) Clear Lake on the road.

In the rematch here Friday night, the end result was another win for the Lions, but SEHS head coach Steve Neuberger still found plenty of positives.

Sara Faber scored a game-high 27 to lead Clear Lake (18-2 overall, 13-0 in North Central Conference) to a 70-28 triumph. Lexi Fasbender added 12.

As a team, the Lions sank 11 three-pointers.

The Gaels (4-16, 2-11) were led by senior Livi Huss, who scored eight points and collected 10 rebounds. Jocy Timmerman, Cambrie McBride and Erin Flattery all had five each.

“We knew going in it would be very, very difficult,” Neuberger said. “But we wanted to work on some specific things on defense that we can use once postseason play begins.”

Clear Lake opened the game on a 15-4 run and never looked back, leading by as many as 28 in the second. Faber scored 12 in the first quarter alone, outscoring St. Edmond by six.

Timmerman came off the bench in the second, scoring four points. She also grabbed five rebounds. Flattery and Hannah Huss had four boards each.

“I feel like we are playing much better basketball now compared to the beginning of the season,” Neuberger said. “We’ve just got to keep getting better on both ends of the court.”

Earlier this week, the Gaels picked up a 41-39 victory at Webster City and followed that up by scoring a season-high 53 points in a loss to Pocahontas Area Thursday.

“We found some new units that gave us a spark,” Neuberger said. “We’ve just got to do a better job of limiting our turnovers and being strong with the basketball.”

St. Edmond concludes its regular season Tuesday at home against Algona. Tip is set for 6:15 p.m. The Gaels begin 2A, Region 2 play at home next Saturday vs. South Hamilton.
