Steve Neuberger didn’t want the St. Edmond girls to rest on their five-point halftime lead here Tuesday night vs. Southeast Valley.

And the Gaels listened.

St. Edmond went on a quick 6-0 run that turned into a 10-2 spurt over the first half of the third quarter, helping them claim a 52-42 victory over the Jaguars.

Erin Flattery had 12 points, nine rebounds and three steals, Hannah Huss and Jocy Timmerman added 10 points each, and Cambrie McBride had seven for the Gaels (1-1 overall).

Huss also grabbed eight rebounds and had three steals, with Timmerman adding six boards and three steals.

“We talked at halftime about not wanting to be satisfied with a five-point lead,” Neuberger said. “We wanted to come out and extend that. I thought the girls did a good job of playing with a lot of energy and bumping that lead up.”

The Jaguars (2-2) were led by Kasey Lundberg, who scored 13 points, and Shelby Cummins, who added 10.

St. Edmond held a decisive 42-20 advantage in total rebounds, which helped off-set the 32 turnovers they committed.

“I’m pleased with the team effort,” Neuberger said. “We had good production off the bench. We wanted to show that we are a better team than what we showed (last) Friday, and we did that.”

The Gaels closed out the first half on a strong note, scoring nine of the final 11 points to take a 23-16 lead. Huss, Flattery and Timmerman all had six points each over the opening 16 minutes.

St. Edmond had 19 points off its bench, as senior Livi Huss made her return to the court after missing the opener with an injury.

“Cambrie and Jocy are great spark plugs that come in with a lot of energy,” Neuberger said. “And getting Livi back is a big bonus.”

Lundberg had six steals for Southeast Valley.

The Gaels return to North Central Conference play Friday, traveling to Hampton-Dumont. The Jaguars head to Emmetsburg that night.
