Turnovers too much for IC women to overcome

It was pretty easy for Iowa Central women’s coach Kelly Kruger to see where his team failed to execute here Thursday night.

The Tritons let a nine-point second half lead slowly evaporate, falling to the Grand View JV inside Hodges Fieldhouse, 64-63.

With under a second left in the game, Jewell Gasteiger sank her second of two free throws for the win.

Rachel Toto led Iowa Central (0-1 overall) with 16 points and Sarah Rolling had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Toto and Rolling are the only two players back for Kruger, who is in his second season.

“We gave up too many important rebounds and we didn’t take care of the ball,” Kruger said. “Everything we gained on the glass, we gave back with turnovers.

“I thought we didn’t play with a whole lot of composure, especially down the stretch. We just kept creating opportunities to lose the game.”

The Tritons led by as many as 11 in the first half, as Rolling and Emma O’Donoghue each scored six. The Vikings cut it down to two entering the fourth quarter, but Iowa Central responded, taking a 49-40 lead on the heels of a 7-0 run.

Grand View, though, finished strong, outscoring the Tritons 7-2 over the final minute. Abbi Ellis had 18 points and six rebounds, with Shaleia Jamison adding 16 and Casey Carr 13.

“We’ve got to practice better,” Kruger said. “We have to demand more out of each other in practice because by pushing each other, we’ll be better in games.”

Mardaeja Cross added 10 points and six rebounds, and Makenna Carver had eight points, nine boards and three assists. O’Donoghue, a transfer, grabbed seven boards.

The Tritons return to action on Monday when they travel to face Central-Columbus. They return home on Nov. 20 against Graceland JV.
