Titans edged by No. 1 BH/RV

HULL — For the second consecutive year, South Central Calhoun’s season came to an end here, as top-ranked Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley won, 28-20.

The defending champion Nighthawks will play Waukon in a Class 2A semifinal at Cedar Falls next week. Waukon knocked off New Hampton last night, 34-13.

Chase McAlister ran for 130 yards and caught two touchdown passes from Hunter Muhlbauer for the Titans (9-2 overall). Tanner Macke added 110 yards rushing on the night.

Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley (10-1) claimed an early 14-0 lead, as South Central Calhoun was kept out of the end zone after moving the ball inside the 20 twice.

“We had some opportunities, we just didn’t finish,” SCC head coach Bryan Case said. “We came away with nothing on those two drives in the first half and we had some costly turnovers.

“But we also kept them out of the end zone after a fumble in the third. It was just a weird game overall, but our kids never hung their heads.”

Muhlbauer, who scored the first touchdown of the game in the second quarter, hit McAlister in the third on a 76-yard touchdown. The two connected once more in the fourth from 15 yards out.

“We had too many miscues that really hurt us,” Case said. “With just under 10 minutes to go, we had two more chances on offense and couldn’t put a drive together.”

Muhlbauer had 125 yards passing on the night. Jared Campbell led the South Central Calhoun defense with two sacks and Macke made six solo stops.

Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley will carry a 10-game win streak into the semifinals. They are 22-2 over the last 24 games, losing only to West Lyon twice.
