Area squads primed for playoff run

Webster City's Zane Williams runs against Humboldt.

This Friday marks the start of the second season in prep football, as the postseason kicks off around the state.

A total of 80 teams from Class 4A down through the 8-man ranks have qualified for the playoffs, with all of them hoping to advance through to the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls and compete for a state title.

Four area squads will be in action this evening, with two of them at home and the other two hitting the road.

In Class 3A, defending state runner-up Webster City (8-1 overall) heads to Pella (8-1) to meet the fifth-ranked Dutch. The other road game features No. 4 (8-man) Newell-Fonda at third-ranked Audubon.

South Central Calhoun (8-1), ranked seventh in 2A, will welcome No. 6 Sioux Center, with sixth-rated (A) and defending state runner-up Bishop Garrigan (9-0) taking on West Hancock (6-3).

Winners will advance to the quarterfinals, which are next Friday night at host sites. All semifinals and championship round games will be in Cedar Falls.

Here’s a look at those games:

No. 9 (3A) Webster City (8-1) at No. 5 Pella (8-1)

The Lynx, who reached the title round a season ago, received a late-season boost when senior Zane Williams returned to the field last Friday. Williams ran for 145 yards and scored two touchdowns, making three tackles on defense in his first action in several weeks.

Williams has 1,258 yards and 18 touchdowns on the year, with Dylan Steen adding 760 and 10 scores. Steen, a junior, has also completed 25 of 59 for 489 yards with six touchdowns.

The Lynx held Boone to 14 points last week and have kept three other teams under 10 this year. Caleb Olson leads the unit with 68 tackles, including six for loss. Luke Rohmiller also has six tackles for loss.

Steen also leads the state with 10 picks this year.

Webster City will need all of that when they hit the road to meet Pella.

The Dutch have won seven in a row since a loss to Webster City’s district foe, second-ranked Dallas Center-Grimes (10-7) in Week 2. They have scored at least 40 points four times this year.

Ryan Gustafson, a junior, has completed 73 of 148 for 1,245 yards with 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Reece Schnell has 630 yards rushing, with Avery Van Zee and Sam Warner providing second and third options.

No. 6 Sioux Center (8-1) at No. 7 (2A) South Central Calhoun (8-1)

The Titans and head coach Bryan Case have won eight in a row since a 10-point loss to Carroll, with all eight wins coming by 10 points or more.

Junior Chase McAlister has turned himself into one of the top dual-threat players in the state, recording 504 yards rushing on 52 carries and 404 yards receiving on 16 receptions. He has scored 18 touchdowns and averages over 13 yards per play.

Jonathon Frantz has rushed for 620 yards and Hunter Muhlbauer is completing 56 percent of his throws for just over 1,000 yards with a 12-to-3 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

The SCC defense allowed over seven points just once in district play. Tyler Jones has made 63.5 tackles, with Tanner Macke at 39 and Hunter Riedesel at 38.5.

McAlister has eight interceptions and the Titans have forced 24 turnovers.

After winning its first seven, Sioux Center was topped by No. 1 Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, 34-14. They rebounded with a win over Pocahontas Area to close the regular season and finish as district runners-up.

The Warriors will test that South Central Calhoun secondary, as junior quarterback Cade Bleeker is 140 of 221 for 1,614 yards with 24 touchdowns and just five interceptions. His favorite target is Brendan Zeutenhorst, who has 49 receptions and 573 yards, but four others have at least 100 yards receiving.

West Hancock (6-3) at No. 6 (A) Bishop Garrigan (9-0)

Only a handful of teams escaped the regular season unbeaten, and Marty Wadle’s Golden Bears are one of them. Garrigan ran its regular season win streak to 27 with a victory over St. Edmond to close things out last Friday.

They have won three consecutive district titles, going 21-0 during that time in those games, and advanced to the state championship game a year ago before falling to Gladbrook-Reinbeck, who is ranked one spot behind them this season.

Junior quarterback Brad Capesius, a returning starter, has thrown for 668 yards and rushed for another 363. Drew Bacha sits at 892 yards with 14 touchdowns and T.J. Schnurr has 22 receptions for 366 yards.

On defense, the Golden Bears are anchored by Zack Muller, Drake Buscherfeld and Eric Thul. Muller has 62 tackles, Buscherfeld 44.5 and Thul 34.5.

West Hancock, an old rival of Bishop Garrigan’s, will be seeking redemption after falling in the playoff last year to the Golden Bears, 12-8 in the quarterfinals.

It remains the same focus as ever on offense for the Eagles, as MaCoy Yeakel has 1,083 yards rushing on just 87 carries, averaging 12.4 yards per attempt. He has scored nine touchdowns, with Tate Hagen posting 863 yards and 13 scores.

No. 4 (8-man) Newell-Fonda (8-1) at No. 3 Audubon (9-0)

The Mustangs are as tested as anyone in the state, as their district featured No. 2 Remsen St. Mary’s and a handful of other teams who were ranked throughout the season.

Now, Brian Wilken’s crew will be tested yet again to start the playoffs.

Newell-Fonda has scored over 40 points six times this year, reaching the 60-point mark twice. Jesse Haack has 955 yards rushing, Austin Gerdes 794 and Bryce Coppock another 446.

Haack also has 15 rushing touchdowns, with Gerdes adding 10 and Coppock four. Coppock, a sophomore, is 28 of 55 passing for 504 yards with 11 touchdowns, hitting Nate Pedersen 13 times for 362 yards and R.J. Rojas 11 times for 174.

Haack paces the defensive unit, having made 67 tackles. Coppock has six interceptions and Rojas three fumble recoveries.

Audubon has pitched four shutouts this year, including three straight to conclude the regular season. They posted 91 points in a win earlier this year over River Valley.

Tyler Riebhoff has rushed for 1,015 yards and 24 touchdowns, averaging over 11 yards per carry. Nolan Smith has 779 yards and 21 more scores on the ground.

Riebhoff is also the starting quarterback, having completed 46 of 73 for 806 yards and 14 touchdowns with just one interception.
