Eagles denied playoff spot

JEWELL — South Hamilton’s rushing attack was too much for Eagle Grove to overcome o Friday night, as the Hawks punched a state playoff berth.

Tenth-ranked South Hamilton (8-1 overall, 6-1 in district) earned a 21-7 victory over the Eagles (6-3, 4-3).

Eagle Grove’s lone touchdown came on a 99 yard kickoff return from Ryan Smith in the second quarter.

Evan Anderson had 48 yards rushing and Niko Padilla had 24.

“We just weren’t able to move the ball,” said Eagle Grove head coach Paul Hansch. “We had 74 yards rushing and 19 passing.

“We just got beat at the line of scrimmage and they had a strong rushing attack.”

The Hawks had 269 yards of total offense, 239 yards coming on the ground.

Logan Klemp led South Hamilton with 189 yards on 42 carries and one touchdown.

The Hawks were 2-for-2 passing with two touchdowns.

Titans win title

LAKE CITY — South Central Calhoun will be making its seventh trip to the state playoffs after sealing a district title on Friday night.

The Titans (8-1 overall, 7-0 in Class 2A, District 7) earned a 35-7 victory over East Sac County (5-4, 5-2).

South Central Calhoun has been a consolidated school for eight seasons and only missed the 2012 campaign. As a school, they’ve been in the playoffs 11 of the last 12 seasons.

“It’s huge (to win the district title),” said South Central Calhoun head coach Brian Case. “Going into the beginning of the year, we didn’t know what we had.

“Offensively we were not good, but we came together and got better as the year went on and that says a lot for our team.”

Senior Hunter Muhlbauer had a strong night behind center, throwing two long touchdown passes.

He connected with Jonathon Frantz on an 80-yard strike and Chase McAlister from 40 yards out.

Muhlbauer was 4-for-5 passing for 141 yards and two scores.

Chase McAlister added two rushing touchdowns from 17 and 24 yards out.

Frantz also scored on the ground from 19 yards out early in the contest. He finished with 89 yards on 16 carries. Frantz also had two grabs for 88 yards.

Tanner Macke had 65 yards on nine carries and McAlister had 50 on four totes. Tyler Jones had 6.5 tackles and Macke had five. McAlister also picked off a pass.

East Sac County’s Griff O’Neill had the only touchdown for the Raiders.

Wildcats end strong

HUMBOLDT — It may have not been the season Humboldt was hoping for, but the Wildcats finished on a strong note.

Humboldt (3-6 overall, 2-5 in district) pulled out a 29-22 overtime victory over Le Mars (2-7, 1-6).

The Wildcats scored with 15 seconds left in regulation on a Jamison Heinz 21-yard touchdown strike to Eli Sande. Sawyer Savery caught the two-point conversion to tie the contest.

The Wildcats had the ball first in overtime and Heinz hit Savery for nine yards before Tyler Vitzthum ran in from one-yard out to give the Wildcats the eventual winning touchdown.

The Humboldt defense then stuffed LeMars inside the one-yard line on fourth down as Savery made the saving tackle.

Vitzthum also had a 24-yard touchdown run in the third period.

The Wildcats also scored on a blocked punt that Savery recovered in the endzone for a score.

Humboldt overcame a 22-0 halftime defecit with six turnovers, five coming in the first half.

Vitzthum finished with 76 yards on 22 carries and Heinz had 52 on eight totes.

Joey Busse was 7-for-23 passing for 94 yards and Heinz was 4 of 7 for 78.

Sande had three catches for 59, while Lucas Volf had three for 41 and Heinz had four for 43.

Vitzthum had an interception for the Wildcats.

Williams back with vengeance

BOONE — Zane Williams hadn’t been on the football field in three weeks, but once he returned, it didn’t take him long to get back into early season form.

Williams, who missed the last three games for medical issues, helped lead the Lynx (8-1 overall, 6-1 in district) to a 27-14 victory over Boone (6-3, 4-3) and a spot in the playoffs for the 10th time in 11 seasons and 10th in a row.

”We’re in a good spot now and it’s great that the kids get to play in a big game,” said Webster City head coach Bob Howard. “This senior class has seen and played in a lot of them over the years, and they’ve certainly raised the bar from where it was 11 years ago.”

Williams carried the ball 39 times for 145 yards and two touchdowns. He was a stalwart on defense as well with three tackles and two interceptions, one coming on the final play. He had touchdown runs of four and three yards.

Dylan Steen returned an interception 22 yards for a score minutes before half.

With the Lynx leading 21-14 with 1:54 to go in the game, Webster City ran a reverse pass and Jordan Tanner hit Trace Kepler from 63 yards out for the eventual winning touchdown.

Steen was 5-for-10 passing for 77 yards.

Boone quarterback Mason Hulse, came into the contest with only two interceptions, threw six on the night. He finished 16 of 33 passing for 314 yards.

Along with Williams, Steen also had two interceptions. Caleb Olson and Malachi Montes each had interceptions.

Cooper Lawson had 6.5 tackles and three sacks.

Southeast Valley misses playoff bid

CARROLL — Carroll Kuemper held the Southeast Valley offense in check and denied the Jaguars a playoff spot.

The Knights (7-2 overall, 6-1 in district) earned a 28-6 victory.

Nyles Johnson had the lone touchdown for Southeast Valley, returning an interception 90 yards for a touchdown.

Kyler Fisher had 21 carries for 131 yards.

Johnson had two catches for 41 yards and Hunter Kruse was 5-for-9 passing for 77 yards.

Manson NW can’t get past Ogden

MANSON — The Manson Northwest Webster football took an early lead on Ogden, but couldn’t stop the Bulldogs on Friday night.

Ogden (3-6 overall, 2-5 in district) pulled out a 21-14 victory.

Derek Girard threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Keegan Pritchard to give the Cougars (4-5, 3-4) an early 6-0 lead.

Reid Steinberg added the second touchdown on a six-yard run.

Steinberg and Mark Condon had 76 yards rushing each on 19 and 14 carries respectively.
