Iowa Central heads to Kansas

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Iowa Central football team will head to Kansas this week after five straight games in Iowa.

The Tritons (0-5 overall, 0-1 ICCAC) lost to Independence (47-7) last week in a virtual home game in Manson. They played three of their first four home games inside Dodger Stadium and made a stop in Iowa Falls to face Ellsworth.

The Tritons will face No. 20 Hutchinson (4-1).

“Hutchinson is a scary team,” said Iowa Central head coach Kevin Twait. “They beat Highland in double-OT, who rolled past us.

“They’re a heck of a football team and look to run the ball. We have to stop the run to be able to slow them down. Offensively we have to make some big plays and keep our defense off the field.”

Iowa Central struggled on defense last week, giving up 431 yards of total offense.

Florida State transfer Malik Henry threw for 171 yards and two touchdowns, while Tyrone Taylor ran for 95 yards and score.

Triton quarterback Taylor Holston threw for 73 yards and a touchdown to Ty Sohn.

Iowa Central did receive some good news this week, as quarterbacks B.J. Phillips and Zach Parker return to the lineup.

Phillips was a dual threat for the Tritons before suffering an injury. Phillips has thrown for 371 yards and one score. He has rushed for 198 yards and two touchdowns.

“It’s nice to get our starting quarterback back,” Twait said. “There is no question that Phillips is a playmaker. He’s good with his arm and his legs.

“He opens up a lot of opportunities.”

Defensive end Michael Slater, who is a transfer from Iowa, also returns for Iowa Central.

Hutchinson (4-1) is led by quarterback Cam Jones, who has thrown for 797 yards and five scores.

BJ Emmons has rushed for 271 yards and seven carries. Receiver Jaylen Erwin has caught seven balls for 163 yards and four scores.
