Gaels 2nd at Thomas Classic

HOLSTEIN — The St. Edmond girls cross country team finished second here Saturday at the Tim Thomas Classic.

Emmetsburg was first, finishing with 56 points, as the Gaels scored 64. Bishop Garrigan placed seventh overall and Manson Northwest Webster was 10th.

“We’ve got a good rivalry going with Emmetsburg,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “We’ve been going back-and-forth.”

Abby Landwehr was the top finisher for St. Edmond, as the junior placed fifth in 20:53.01. Riley Mayer was eighth (21:24.23) and Audrey Kolacia finished 12th (21:41.02).

Jacey Ash placed 22nd (22:32.63) and Leah Johnson was 27th (22:47.60).

“Jacey and Leah have gotten closer to Audrey, so that is good to see,” Szalat said. “Overall, I thought we ran well and had good times.”

For the E-Hawks, Raven Brown finished third in 20:25.35, with Gabrielle Janssen placing seventh and Hailey Foxhoven 10th.

Freshman Maddie Moline led Manson Northwest Webster, placing 13th in 21:41.94. Alisa Altman was the top finisher for Bishop Garrigan, taking 25th overall.

Taylor Sporrer of Logan-Magnolia was the race winner in 19:51.19.

On the boys side, the Cougars finished sixth overall, Emmetsburg was seventh and St. Edmond eighth.

Brayden Pritchard had the top finish for MNW, placing ninth in 18:00.18. LeMars Gehlen’s Will Roder was the race winner in 16:55.50.

Jed Tracy led the Gaels, clocking a time of 18:17.87 to place 14th overall. Ryan Duckett was 29th and Nate Montgomery finished 48th.

“The boys all had better times and ran well,” Szalat said. “We’ve been able to compete better against teams closer to our size and we were close to the sixth place finishing team.”

Emmetsburg’s Dawson Carlson finished 23rd and Joseph Meis of Bishop Garrigan was 28th.

St. Edmond runs next on Monday, Sept. 18 at Humboldt.
