Area teams fight for district position

We’ve reached the home stretch of the football season, with Week 6 upon us.

Just four games remain before the playoffs are here, with teams around the state jockeying for those coveted spots.

Two Top-10 matchups are on deck Friday night, with sixth-ranked (Class 3A) and defending state runner-up Webster City heading to No. 2 Dallas Center-Grimes. The winner will have a leg-up on the district race, but a third unbeaten — No. 9 Boone — still sits down the road for both.

In Lake City, ninth-rated (2A) South Central Calhoun entertains No. 10 Carroll Kuemper. The Titans and Knights are undefeated in district play along with East Sac County, who is home to Shenandoah.

Manson Northwest Webster tries to earn a keynote victory in the career of Jeff Anliker, as the Cougars head to second-ranked (1A) Van Meter. The Bulldogs have won 22 consecutive regular season games.

Here’s a look at those contests along with the rest of the slate:

No. 6 (3A) Webster City (5-0, 3-0) at No. 2 (3A) Dallas Center-Grimes (5-0, 3-0)

Just like last year, Class 3A, District 2 is stacked at the top with three teams ranked in the Top-10.

Two of those meet this week with the Lynx and the Fillies. The third, Boone, heads to Greene County.

Over the past three seasons, Webster City has posted a record of 27-3, including a 22-1 mark in the regular season under legendary head coach Bob Howard. Last year, the Lynx advanced to the state championship game.

Senior Zane Williams has moved right into the lead back role for Howard, rushing for 1,113 yards and 16 touchdowns. Dylan Steen has 499 yards on the ground and another 375 in the air, with Trace Kepler adding 112.

Jordan Tanner is the top target for Steen, hauling in 10 passes for 168 yards. Kepler has another 126 on just three catches.

Williams currently sits second in the state in rushing, just four yards behind Williamsburg’s Gage Hazen-Fabor. His touchdowns are tied for fifth in the state.

Caleb Olson, Luke Rohmiller and Max Hackbarth anchor the Lynx defense in tackles, with Steen picking off five passes, which is tied for third-most in the state.

The Fillies balance out their rushing, as Tanner Epple (487), Damon Clapper (316) and Luke Fistler (273) have scored 12 times. Clapper is the quarterback, completing 51 percent of his throws for 612 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions.

Dallas Center-Grimes went 6-3 a season ago, falling to Webster City 31-10.

No. 10 (2A) Carroll Kuemper (4-1, 3-0) at No. 9 (2A) South Central Calhoun (4-1, 3-0)

Since beginning district action, the Titans and head coach Bryan Case have been on a roll.

South Central Calhoun has outscored its last three opponents 135-14, with Chase McAlister filling the do-everything role.

McAlister, a junior, leads SCC in rushing with 400 yards on just 26 attempts and receiving with 192 yards on eight catches. That gives him an average of 17 yards per touch.

He’s also picked off six passes, returning two for scores, adding a punt return for a touchdown and a passing TD to his season for good measure. McAlister ranks second in the state in interceptions.

The Titans, though, are far from a one-man show. Hunter Muhlbauer has completed 23 of 49 for 537 yards, with Jonathon Frantz adding 364 yards rushing and Tanner Macke 193.

All of that and more will be needed against the Knights, who have been just as dominant over the past three weeks. Kuemper owns wins over Shenandoah (51-21), Clarinda (42-0) and Underwood (33-0).

Miles Rupiper has rushed for 612 yards and nine scores, averaging almost 10 yards per carry. Joey Pottebaum has 507 yards passing, with Parker Badding and Sam Auen becoming his favorite targets.

Manson Northwest Webster (3-2, 2-1) at No. 2 (1A) Van Meter (5-0, 3-0)

Jeff Anliker and the Cougars could make a bold statement if they can go on the road and knock second-ranked Van Meter off.

The Bulldogs have turned themselves into a state power, winning 22 consecutive regular season games and posting a 27-3 mark overall in their last 30.

Van Meter’s last regular season defeat came in Week 1 of the 2015 season to Madrid.

Led by running back Carson Rhodes, the Bulldogs have scored 37.4 points per game. Rhodes has 778 yards and eight scores, with Blake Fryar balancing him out by completing 57 percent of his passes for 694 yards and 10 TDs.

Following a loss to South Hamilton, Manson Northwest Webster has posted back-to-back wins over Eagle Grove (21-6) and West Central Valley (36-7).

Junior QB Derek Girard has thrown for 632 yards with six touchdowns to just one pick. Keegan Pritchard has 20 receptions spanning 309 yards and five of those scores, with Reid Steinberg, Mark Condon and Blake Larsen combining for 716 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.

Shenandoah (0-5, 0-3) at East Sac County (3-2, 3-0)

After back-to-back losses to start the year, the Raiders find themselves in playoff contention thanks to three straight district wins.

Last Friday, East Sac County won a barnburner, besting Southeast Valley in overtime, 34-27. Garret Bruce ran for 161 yards and two scores, giving him 585 and nine on the year.

Marcus Green ran in two TDs and caught another from sophomore Griff O’Neill, who was 9 of 14 for 117 yards passing.

Shenandoah is coming off its closest game of the year, falling to Red Oak, 20-13. Mason Silence leads the offense with 563 yards, with Kyle Owens adding 438.
