City golf tourney ready for action

The 37th annual city golf tournament, sponsored by Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota and presented by The Messenger, gets under way Saturday morning at Lakeside Golf Course and the Fort Dodge Country Club.

Open and senior division competitors on the men’s side tee off with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start at Lakeside. The women also begin at 7:30 a.m., with Saturday’s round at the FDCC following incremental tee times.

All five 2016 champions — Lucas Peed (men’s open), Kelsey Faiferlick and Dee Cummins (women’s open), Terry Miller (men’s senior) and Peg Christensen (women’s senior) — are expected to participate. Last year’s tournament was limited to 18 holes due to inclement weather.

Peed carded a three-under par 68 at the FDCC to jump ahead of Eddie Doyle (71) and Austin Morrow (73) a year ago. It marked Peed’s first title since his 2001 and ’03 crowns.

Doyle and Morrow, the 2015 men’s open bracket winner, will be playing again this weekend.

Faiferlick became the first player in city tourney history — regardless of age or gender — to capture six consecutive titles by sharing the trophy with Cummins a year ago. Both opened with rounds of 81 at Lakeside.

Miller has prevailed on the men’s senior side in 2012, ’13, ’15 and ’16. He shot a one-under par 70 at the FDCC last summer, which was a single stroke better than Dean Wendell (71) and two clear of Darron Baker (72).

Christensen owns two women’s senior golds: 2013 and ’16. She was also a runner-up in ’14 and ’15.

Tee times will reverse on Sunday for the men; the 7:30 a.m. participants on Saturday will start at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, and vice versa. The championship nine is expected to start at around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday evening at the FDCC.

Temperatures are predicted to be in the mid-80s on Saturday and around 90 on Sunday, with humid conditions and very little wind. There is a 40 percent chance of precipitation on Sunday afternoon.

Lakeside is a par-72 layout; the Country Club is a par-71.
