St. Edmond loses twice to Norsemen

All Joe Shanks wanted to do following Thursday night’s doubleheader loss to Roland-Story here at Rogers Park was look forward.

The Norsemen picked up a pair of five-inning victories by scores of 13-2 and 12-0.

As far as Shanks is concerned, though, the goal this week was to finish 3-0 in North Central Conference games, which the Gaels can accomplish Friday night at Clarion-Goldfield/Dows.

“This was a big week for us with five games, including three in the NCC,” Shanks said. “Our goal was to go 3-0 in those games. We just have to flush this one out and get prepared for (Friday night).”

On Monday, St. Edmond (11-11 overall) earned an incredible 15-11 come-from-behind victory over Humboldt, while adding a 3-1 road win vs. Iowa Falls-Alden Wednesday. They fell to Pocahontas Area on Tuesday in a non-league affair.

Cole Allison and Cael Kolacia each went 2-for-2 at the plate in the first game, while Brant Reiling and Jake Szalat drove in a run. In the second, only Jackson Kochendorfer recorded a hit for SEHS.

“We had two really good games vs. Humboldt and Iowa Falls-Alden,” Shanks said. “We’ve just got to focus on that now and continue to get better.”

Roland-Story (15-12) snapped a three-game losing streak with the sweep. They belted out 21 hits in the twinbill, including a three-run homer from Zach Shadlow. Shadlow, a junior, drove in six runs in the two games, while Nathan Bell had five RBI in the nightcap.

Matthew Weaver, a senior, tossed a one-hitter with two strikeouts and four walks after eighth-grader Zach Twedt earned the win in the opener with a six-hitter and two Ks. Weaver and Twedt are a combined 9-2 this season on the mound.

“They are a really good hitting team that had two good pitching performances,” Shanks said. “Roland-Story made great contact and took advantage of too many walks and mistakes that we made.”

First-pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. in Clarion Friday night. The Cowboys (3-12, 1-8) have lost six in a row, including a 4-1 setback to St. Edmond (5-4 in NCC) earlier this month.
