The second-ranked (Class 2A) North Union softball team gave St. Edmond an early look at what they might be facing next week here Thursday night, scoring an 8-0 victory at Rogers Park.

Behind three home runs from three different batters, the Warriors won for the fourth straight time, improving to 26-6 on the season. Kyarsten Mullen, Maddie Rolling and Kate Anderson all went deep, giving North Union 25 home runs this year.

The Gaels (9-16 overall) honored lone senior Megan Flattery before the game. Flattery is a five-year letterwinner for SEHS in softball and collected one of the three hits off Warrior Anna Ingalls. Audrey Kolacia went 2-for-3 from her leadoff spot.

“Megan has had a phenomenal career at St. Edmond,” St. Edmond head coach Nick Clark said. “She has earned everything she has received. Megan is everything a coach can ask for in an athlete and a person.

“Hopefully we can send her off on a high note next week.”

North Union, which boasts four starters back from a sixth place state team a year ago, jumped out early with three runs in the first and four more in the second. Anderson hit a two-run homer after Rolling started it off with an RBI-single, and Mullen added a two-run shot an inning later.

Gael eighth-grader Ella Vratny, though, retired 12 of 15 after the second, including nine straight between the fourth and sixth innings.

“We battled and never hung our heads, which is what this team has shown me all season,” Clark said. “We didn’t commit any errors, we had quality at-bats against a great pitcher; I’m very pleased with what we did on the field.

“We’ve had a lot of games this year where things just didn’t go our way. That will change for us.”

Rolling, the younger sister of Iowa Central basketball and softball player Sarah Rolling, was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base. Ingalls, Anderson and Shawna Person each had two hits for the Warriors, who are 10-3 over their last 13 games.

Ingalls also dominated inside the circle, striking out 11, allowing just three hits and walking no one. The senior is now 61-11 in her career with 541 strikeouts.

St. Edmond finishes out its regular season Friday night at Clear Lake, while North Union does the same at Garner-Hayfield/Ventura. The Gaels open 1A, Region 3 play Monday at Rogers Park vs. Coon Rapids-Bayard and the Warriors await the winner of MMCRU/Sioux Central on Wednesday in a 2A, Region 1 contest.
