Offense powers Gaels to win

The St. Edmond softball team flexed their offensive might here Wednesday night, posting a 10-9 victory over North Central Conference rival Clear Lake at Rogers Park.

Jocy Timmerman had three hits and drove in three runs, Erin Flattery was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and four other Gaels had two hits each in the win.

After seeing a 9-5 lead get erased by four Lion runs in the fifth and another in the sixth, St. Edmond (4-6 overall, 3-2 in NCC) scored the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by eighth-grader catcher Kacey Kruthoff in the sixth.

Audrey Kolacia had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run, Macey Mason had two hits with two runs scored and a steal, and Megan Flattery had two hits and an RBI.

“Great effort, great production from everybody in the lineup,” SEHS head coach Nick Clark said. “It wasn’t perfect, but we made them earn everything and we earned everything.

“It was just a great game and a great win.”

Jacque Oberg swiped two bases and scored twice, while Sydney Nelson delivered a key two-RBI single in the fourth as part of a five-run inning.

“I thought we did a great job of finishing plays all night,” Clark said. “I’ve been preaching that all season and the girls did it.”

Rylee Kinney also stole a bag, as the Gaels now have 50 steals on the year. Last season, they recorded just 38 steals.

“I’m excited by the way we played and I think the girls are too,” Clark said. “We are doing the little things that we need to do to win and that shows me they are getting better and better.”

The Gaels scored three in the first and added another in the second before Clear Lake (3-6, 2-4) went up 5-4 in the fourth. St. Edmond answered in the home half of the inning, batting around and plating five runs.

Kolacia had a double and an RBI single in the frame, as eight straight batters reached base at one point.

“We could have hung our heads after Clear Lake tied it,” Clark said. “But we didn’t. Instead, we got that last out and came right back and scored the winning run.”

Ella Vratny picked up the win inside the circle, striking out five and walking just one.

“Ella did a great job and got some big strikeouts when we really needed them,” Clark said. “She’s growing up out there on the field.”

For the Lions, Julia Merfeld was 4-for-4 and Sara Faber hit a three-run homer in the fifth. Michaela Niles also had three RBI.

St. Edmond, which matched its win total from a season ago, will play at Alta/Aurelia Thursday night before returning home Friday to meet Clarion-Goldfield/Dows.

In the junior varsity contest, the Gaels won, 8-3. Chloe Lewison pitched a complete-game and Devyn Scott led the SEHS offense.
