No. 10 Dodgers split at Valley Shootout

WEST DES MOINES — The 10th-ranked (Class 5A) Fort Dodge softball team’s record at the West Des Moines Valley Shootout directly reflected the way the Dodgers played here on Saturday.

Head coach Andi Adams’ squad split in their two contests, playing well at times but also struggling in stretches. Fort Dodge (6-3 overall) was doubled up by unbeaten and No. 4 Indianola, 6-3, before doing the same to Des Moines Lincoln, 4-2.

The Dodgers uncharacteristically committed seven errors on the afternoon, and they were shaky in all facets of the game at different points.

”We’ve still got a lot of work to do,” Adams said. ”But it’s the first week of June, so that can be expected. We pride ourselves on being a strong defensive team, but we’re mixing and matching right now and that’s having an effect on everything.

”Once we get healthy, things will change and we’ll be more consistent.”

Fort Dodge was again without all-stater Daphne Alstott. The shortstop is still recovering from an injured hand, and Adams hopes to have her back this coming week.

A five-run first inning powered the Indians, who are now 9-0 overall. The Dodgers did chip away at the deficit from there, and freshman Katelyn Werning tossed three hitless innings of relief.

Aubrey Davis and Mack Provin doubled in the loss, and Loghen Schnetzer hit a triple.

Fort Dodge jumped ahead on Lincoln with two runs in the first inning and never looked back. Bre Tjebben homered and socked a two-run double, while also picking up the win. Werning registered the save.

The Dodgers are back in West Des Moines on Monday, facing No. 12 Dowling for a CIML Iowa Conference varsity doubleheader.
