CARROLL — The St. Edmond softball squad plated 21 runs in the CYO Tournament here on Saturday, but it only resulted in a split decision.

The Gaels (3-5 overall) nearly finished off a huge comeback in their opening game before falling a run short against Le Mars Gehlen, 11-10. Their bats stayed hot for the second contest in an 11-8 victory over Council Bluffs St. Albert.

Megan Flattery was 2-for-4 with three RBI in the first tilt, while Erin Flattery was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Jocy Timmerman had three hits and doubled twice, and Macey Mason also recorded three hits. Audrey Kolacia was 2-for-3 as well.

Megan Flattery, Kolacia and Rylee Kinney all tripled for St. Edmond, which plated five runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull within a run of Gehlen (3-6). The Gaels had 17 hits as a team.

”We made a nice run in the seventh, but came up just short,” SE head coach Nick Clark said. ”This was a good hitting day for us. We showed good plate discipline again and hit the ball hard.”

The Gaels didn’t let up in the nightcap, scoring five times in both the second and third innings and holding on from there to beat St. Albert (2-7). Megan Flattery was again the catalyst, going 2-for-3 with four RBI and an inside-the-park home run. Jacque Oberg drove in three runs, while Oberg, Kinney, Devyn Scott and Erin Flattery chipped in two hits each.

”We’re still trying to put seven good, consistent innings together,” Clark said. ”We’re really close to getting over the hump. I’m happy with the effort.”

St. Edmond next heads to Algona on Monday.
