Gaels knock off IF-A

IOWA FALLS — Even a wasp sting didn’t prevent Jake Szalat from a complete game against Iowa Falls-Alden on Wednesday night.

The Gaels (11-9 overall) earned a 3-1 victory over the Cadets behind a solid outing from Szalat.

Szalat was cruising along with a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning, when all of the sudden he threw his glove down and started looking at his hand.

“He got stung by a wasp on his ring finger of his glove hand,” said St. Edmond head coach Joe Shanks. “I can say that was something I’ve never seen in my coaching days.

“But Jake shrugged it off and continued to pitch well.”

Szalat picked up the complete victory, striking out nine and only walking one while allowing an earned run.

The Gaels pounded out six hits, with five coming from fourth through eighth in their lineup.

Cole Allison, Sam Dougall, Cael Kolacia, Szalat, McEvoy and O’Brien had hits for the Gaels.

“It was nice to come out and get the win after a losing a game we could have won (against Pocahontas Area). Pocahontas out-played and deserved to win, but we had our chance,” Shanks said.

Szalat and Nick O’Brien drove in runs for the Gaels.

“I thought we played well defensively,” Shanks said. “I like the lineup we had and the kids are comfortable with it.

The Gaels are back in action today when they host a doubleheader against Roland-Story at Rogers Park. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
