Dodgers walk off for win against Waverly-Shell Rock

MARION — The Fort Dodge softball team executed a squeeze play to score the winning run against Waverly-Shell Rock in the final inning on Saturday at the Linn-Mar Tournament.

The Dodgers (16-15 overall) lost to Dallas Center-Grimes, 5-3, in their opening contest.

It was a back-and-forth contest against Waverly-Shell Rock, as the Go-Hawks went up 3-0 after the top half of the first and then the Dodgers matched the score. FDSH then led 4-3, and W-SR (17-16) took a 5-4 advantage before the Dodgers scored in the sixth.

Fort Dodge’s Aubrey Davis was at the plate with Tehya Miller at third base. The Dogers had a bunt on when Miller got caught in a run-down and made it home for the winning run.

“Waverly is a good team,” Adams said. “The ‘Dodger Way’ is to find a way no matter what, and that’s what we did.

“I love that this team comes out and fights with energy. We talk about adjusting and doing the things off of their pitchers and having patience.”

Fort Dodge freshman Katelyn Werning got her second win in as many days, pitching three innings and allowing four hits while striking out three and walking one. She allowed zero earned runs.

“I know Katelyn feels comfortable with her defense and she goes out there and pitches,” Adams said. “She did a nice job fielding her position and making plays on defense.”

Miller was 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored. Loghen Schnetzer, Mack Provin and Aubrey Davis all had RBI. Miller recorded a double, and Schnetzer tallied a triple.

Harvey had another strong game at the plate against DC-G (16-16), going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a home run. Davis also drove in a run. Harvey’s long ball was an inside-the-park shot.

Mack Provin contributed a triple. Pitcher Meagan Hartman suffered the loss in relief.

“Dallas Center-Grimes can hit the ball,” Adams said. “They are a fundamentally sound team that has been doing it this way for years.”

The Dodgers are back in action on Monday when they travel to Mason City.
