Bulldogs top Gaels in softball

The St. Edmond softball team gave No. 10 (Class 3A) Algona an opening here Monday night at Rogers Park, and the Bulldogs took advantage.

Algona plated seven runs in the fifth on six hits, turning a 3-1 deficit into an 8-3 lead, as they went on to post a 9-4 victory over the Gaels.

Samantha Hood reached base four times on the night, scoring a run, while Janna Julius was 3-for-5 with a steal and a run scored. Freshman Aliyah Buscher had two hits and both ninth-grader Kameryn Etherington and junior Hailey Schmidt drove in a pair of runs.

For the Gaels (9-15 overall, 5-8 in North Central Conference), Megan Flattery was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Jocy Timmerman had a two-RBI single.

“We didn’t respond very well there in the fifth,” SEHS head coach Nick Clark said. “We’ve had some struggles this year with giving up a big inning and when we’ve done that, we haven’t battled back well from it.

“But the girls are learning and we can take a lot of positives away from this game.”

St. Edmond jumped out to a 3-0 lead after Flattery’s single plated Audrey Kolacia and Timmerman’s two-RBI hit against Brooke Fonley.

But the Bulldog junior responded after that, allowing just five hits and a run the rest of the way while striking out five.

“Megan just continues to produce no matter where she is in our lineup,” Clark said. “Jocy had some good at-bats, as did Audrey. We’ve just got to have more big innings ourselves.”

Kolacia was 2-for-4 with two run scored and Devyn Scott had two hits with a stolen base.

The Gaels conclude the week at Clear Lake on Wednesday and at North Union on Thursday. Algona (18-5, 9-2), which has won three straight and six of seven, hosts No. 4 (3A) Humboldt on Wednesday before games at Osage Thursday and at Webster City Friday.
