DES MOINES — All eyes will be on Drake Stadium beginning Thursday with the running of the state track and field meet.

Class 4A and 1A will begin action with the morning session starting at 9 a.m., while 3A and 2A kickoff at 2:40 p.m. The schedule remains the same on Friday with all four classes joining up on Saturday.

The Fort Dodge girls added the 4×100 relay to their qualifier list after Thursday’s meet. Shariah Smith and Car’Maiya Mosley punched automatic tickets by winning titles in the 100 and shot put.

Both will also run the 4×100 along with Daphne Alstott and Shareece Smith. Mosley is seeded sixth in the shot put (40-7.5) and Smith 13th in the 100 (12.79).

For the St. Edmond boys, the shuttle hurdle relay earned an at-large bid. Jackson Bemrich, Sam Dougall, Lucas Itzen and Jake Heidenreich form that unit. Charlie Shelly earned a title on Thursday in the 200, along with the 4×200 relay of Nick Bennett, Cade Naughton, Sean Newell and Shelly.

The Gael girls are qualified in six events total now, as Megan Flattery earned a spot in the 400 and both the sprint and distance medley relays secured at-large berths. Josephine Perry, Devyn Scott, Erin Flattery and Megan Flattery ran the sprint medley, while Scott, Erin Flattery, Megan Flattery and Abby Landwehr the distance medley.

Landwehr also qualified in both the 1500 and 3000, while Erin Flattery has the seventh-best long jump effort entering state after setting a new school record at 16-7.5.

North Union’s Riley Bauer has the lone top area seed, as the state cross country champion posted the fastest 3200 time at 9:56.70. He is also second in 1A in the 1600 (4:36.31) and ran the anchor on the distance medley that is fourth (3:41.98).

Leading the way in 3A for the area boys will be Samonte Bawden of Algona, who posted the fifth-fastest 200 time (22.59) and Dominick Etherington, who has the third-best shot put throw (55-3),

In 2A, South Central Calhoun’s Chase McAlister is seeded fourth in the 800 (2:01.84), Southeast Valley’s Spencer Warehime is fifth in the 1600 (4:32.91) and fifth in the 3200 (9:59.16). East Sac County has the sixth-fastest qualifying time in the distance medley (3:41.30) and the Titans are seeded sixth in the shuttle hurdle relay (1:01.27).

For field events, Colton Bahr of SCC is third in the high jump (6-4).

Humboldt’s Bryce Gidel is fourth in the 3A 3000 (10:45.92) and the Wildcats are also fifth in the 4×800 relay (9:54.58).

Megan Durbin from Greene County cleared 5-5 at the qualifier and is second in that event in 3A. Cassidy Nerland of Webster City is seeded fifth in the 3A shot put (38-10.5).

The Pocahontas Area girls, who claimed a 2A state-qualifying meet team title on Thursday, boast Top-5 seeds in the 3000 from Jill Vonnahme (third, 10:51.41), 100 hurdles by Faith Meyer (tied second, 15.83), the shuttle hurdle relay (second, 1:06.81), the 4×400 relay (second, 4:05.83) and the shot put by Kenzie Sullivan (second, 39-7.5).

In 1A, Bishop Garrigan’s Caitlin Thilges is seeded fourth in the discus after launching a throw of 122-4 and sixth in the shot put (38-9), while Manson Northwest Webster’s Becca Krueger is tied for second in the shot put (39-7).
