DOUBLE TROUBLE

Coming off a tough CIML Iowa Conference doubleheader with Marshalltown, the Fort Dodge baseball team got back in the win column here Wednesday evening, sweeping Des Moines North.

Scores were 11-1 in five innings and 12-4.

The Dodgers (5-4 overall) were on the receiving end of a sweep by the Bobcats on Tuesday, but quickly jumped out to leads on the Polar Bears and never looked back.

“We are trusting the process over the outcome,” FDSH head coach Blake Utley said. “Our boys set goals every single day. They reached all seven goals in the first game and five of the seven in the second.

“If they can do that consistently, we are going to be successful.”

Drake Miller finished the doubleheader 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run, three doubles, six RBI and scored five runs. Keaton Jones and Tyrnan Lara each earned wins on the mound, combining to toss nine innings with one earned run allowed and 11 strikeouts.

In the opener, Fort Dodge plated three runs in the second and added six more in the fourth. Lara, Lucas Williamson, Drew Callon and Nate Scherff all had two hits each.

Jones went five innings, striking out six and walking three.

Des Moines North entered the contest coming off a doubleheader sweep of Des Moines Hoover. They managed to record eight hits in the second game.

“They were coming in high,” Utley said. “It was our job to put them away early and we did that.”

The nightcap started strong for the Dodgers, as they scored three times in the first. That included a straight steal of home plate by Williamson, who also stole second after reaching on a dropped third-strike.

“We came out and stole home right away there in the second game,” Utley said. “That is something we work on and the situation was right for it. I just wish our dugout would have went crazy because that’s not something you see in baseball all the time.”

Anthony Wagner collected two hits, while Williamson, Kade Solverson, Bryer Nelson, Brycen Bell and Scherff drove in a run each.

Fort Dodge stole 11 bases in the second game, including two each from Williamson, Nelson, Bell and Keaton Jones.

“It was good to see Drake get back on track at the plate,” Utley said. “Our guys didn’t have the energy all the time, but they gave enough to get the job done.”

Lara threw four innings of work, striking out five and walking three. Solverson finished the night by recording four strikeouts.

The Dodgers return to action on Monday when they travel to West Des Moines Dowling.
