Dodgers lose heartbreaker

WEST DES MOINES — The Fort Dodge girls soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to 11th-ranked (Class 3A) West Des Moines Dowling here Wednesday night in a Region 2 semifinal.

The Maroons now play Johnston on Monday back here for a spot in the state tournament. The Dragons ousted Des Moines Lincoln, 8-1, last night.

Dowling scored the only goal of the contest in the first half after a missed cross bounced just out of the reach of FDSH keeper Liza Van Zyl.

“It was a fluky goal to say the least,” FDSH head coach Michael Lee said. “We held them and I could not be more proud of this team.

“We had an incredible season, and while it would have been awesome to get the win, I’m still so proud of everything they have accomplished this year.”

The Dodgers (7-8 overall) had a late chance to tie the contest, but a breakaway shot just missed finding a home. Van Zyl, a junior, made six saves on the night.

“I don’t have any doubt in my mind that this is the best soccer team we’ve had in Fort Dodge,” Lee said. “They played amazing. We were never beat 10-0 and we were in every game this year.

“I can’t thank the seniors enough for their leadership and for what they have given to this program.”

The match marked the final contest for Dodger seniors Iris Peimann, Karoline Johnsen, Meagan Hartman, Hannah Amhof and Justice Crooks.
