Bowser places 4th at state

CEDAR RAPIDS — Jonny Bowser didn’t get the chance to contend for another state tennis title here on Saturday, but the Fort Dodge senior still left with a fourth medal.

Bowser placed fourth in the Class 2A singles tournament, falling to Timothy Ellis of Ames, 6-2, 3-6 (10-7) at Veterans Memorial Tennis Center.

It marked the second consecutive year that Bowser reached the semifinals, as he was once again matched up with Iowa City High’s Joe Hoff.

Bowser won the first set, 6-4, but dropped the next two, 6-2, 6-3.

“The semifinal match was very similar to last year in that the quality of tennis was tremendous and only a few big points separated the winner from the loser,” FDSH head coach Jared Feddersen said. “(Hoff) just managed to come up with those points when he needed them.”

Hoff, a district runner-up to Iowa City West’s Jiung Jung, fell to Jung in the finals, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4). Jung finished his career as the fourth three-time state champion in Iowa history.

This marked the fourth appearance at state for Bowser, as he won gold in doubles two years ago with Brian Murman and finished fifth as a freshman with Andrew Stover.

“Jonny has left a legacy in the Dodger tennis record books that will be hard to match by anyone in the future,” Feddersen said. “His individual career may be over, but he’s looking forward to playing one more time on the big stage with Beth Murman at co-ed state tennis.”

Bowser and Murman, who will compete at individual state later this week, won the co-ed doubles title last year.

Iowa City West completed the sweep, as Cole Schneider and Jack Wenzel won the doubles title in straight sets. The Trojans will try to add the team state title to their resume on Tuesday against Linn-Mar, Pleasant Valley and West Des Moines Valley.

Only Des Moines Roosevelt in 2009 as swept all three state titles in 2A.
