Playoff picture coming into focus for area teams

The end of the season is rapidly approaching, and Messenger-area teams are trying to keep postseason hopes alive.

Some programs have been knocked out of the postseason picture already, while some are toeing the line.

Fourth-ranked (Class A) Bishop Garrigan and No. 10 (eight-man)?Newell-Fonda are trying to keep their momentum, with key contests still in front of them despite their six-week run of success.

District foes South Central Calhoun and Southeast Valley are deadlocked in second place in their district, with the Titans having won the head-to-head meeting. They both play critical contests on Friday.

Here is a look at Week 7 tilts throughout the area:

No. 10 Newell-Fonda (5-1, 4-0) at No. 4 Harris-Lake Park

(6-0, 4-0)

The Mustangs will take their unbeaten district record on the road to face unbeaten Harris-Lake Park.

On the ground, senior Reed Kruse has been the workhorse for the Mustangs. Kruse has rushed for 746 yards and 12 touchdowns at an 8.1-yard per carry mark.

Through the air, Kruse is 26-for-47 for 586 yards and 11 scores.

Nate Pedersen has caught 15 balls for seven scores and 315 yards.

H-LP quarterback Bryce Perkins is having an all-state type season, throwing for 1,140 yards and an eight-man high 26 touchdown strikes. Junior Trevor Gunderson has rushed for 557 yards on 79 carries and 12 TDs.

No. 4 Bishop Garrigan (6-0, 4-0) at Ridge View (4-2, 3-2)

Fourth-ranked Bishop Garrigan is on a roll. The Golden Bears’ defense has pitched four consecutive shutouts, outscoring their opponents 163-0 in the last four contests.

Tonight Bishop Garrigan will face Ridge View, which is coming off a loss to Sioux Central.

The Bear offense is led by Gibson Behr. The Golden Bear senior has rushed for 811 yards and 13 touchdowns at 9.8 yard per run clip.

Classmate Max Patkins has 376 yards and five touchdowns, while sophomore quarterback Brad Capesius has four scores on the ground.

Capesius has thrown for 428 yards and four TDs.

Senior Joel Vaske is the main target, catching 16 balls for 327 yards and three touchdowns.

Ridge View is powered by senior quarterback Tyler Wingert, who has thrown for 1,040 yards and 11 scores. Wingert has also rushed for 369 yards and six TDs.

Underwood (3-3, 2-2) at South Central Calhoun (4-2, 3-1)

South Central Calhoun is led by junior Hunter Muhlbauer, who has thrown for 900 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Senior Kody Case has been the main target for Muhlbauer, catching 21 balls for 456 yards and eight scores.

Case has also rushed for 381 yards and five touchdowns. Senior Ashten Halvorsen has five scores as well.

Underwood senior Jared Martin has thrown for 962 yards and nine scores. Junior Hunter Goehring has rushed for 305 yards.

Southeast Valley (4-2, 3-1) at Shenandoah (2-4, 1-3)

Southeast Valley has been gaining momentum the last two weeks, outscoring their opponents, 76-21.

Southeast Valley senior Nolan Brand has thrown for 1,160 yards and 15 scores on 56 of 101 passing. His main target has been classmate Dakota Jaeschke, who has caught 21 balls for 11 touchdowns and 581 yards.

On the ground, junior Kaleb Jondle has carried the ball 82 times for 504 yards and five scores. Senior Aaron Swieter has 75 totes for 322 yards and five TDs.

Shenandoah has two top rushers in Kyle Owens (463) and Nick Swanson (423). They have five and three touchdowns, respectively.

Senior Jordan Miller has 323 yards passing and four TDs.
