Heartbreaker for St. Edmond

HARTLEY – Just when it appeared as if the St. Edmond football team would leave here with their first district win of the season, Hartley-HMS played spoiler.

The Hawks capped a wild fourth quarter with a 5-yard Trevor Dodd touchdown run with 33 seconds left, sending HMS to a 19-16 victory over the here on Gaels Friday night.

St. Edmond (1-5 overall, 0-4 in Class A, District 2) overcame a 13-0 deficit with two Logan Fear touchdown runs and conversions in the span of just under two minutes, but it wasn’t enough.

Fear finished with 75 yards rushing, moving past the 1,000-yard mark for his career. The senior now stands at 1,063, making him the 28th player in school history to achieve the mark.

Charlie Shelly, a freshman, added 99 yards rushing for the Gaels, who have now lost four straight for the first time since Dick Tighe returned to the sidelines.

“We had it in our hands,” Tighe said. “We just couldn’t finish. The kids did everything we asked of them, it just wasn’t meant to be. We have been playing better here as of late, we just aren’t putting it together into a complete game.

“It’s frustrating to see because I know what we are capable of. At the same time, we have to understand that we are playing young kids who make mistakes. When they do that, we have to correct them and move forward.”

St. Edmond had plenty of chances early to get on the scoreboard, as the first four Gael drives ended in HMS (2-4, 2-2) territory. That included a failed fourth-down attempt at the 19, another unsuccessful fourth-down try from the Hawk 13 and an interception.

Hartley-HMS, which snapped a 15-game losing streak last week with a 20-6 win over North Union, struck first in the third quarter when Brett Wohlert scrambled in from three yards out. The Hawks recovered the ensuing onside kick and Dayton Remmers punched it in from seven yards out, making it 13-0.

Those two drives covered 11 plays and 101 total yards. Wohlert finished his night with 170 yards of offense, including 123 passing. Of that, 124 was over the final 24 minutes of action.

“We let (Wohlert) get away from us a few too many times,” Tighe said. “And give him credit because as just a sophomore, he really stepped up and made some plays.”

Fear hit paydirt for the first time after finishing off a quick drive that was helped out by a pair of Hawk penalties. After Wohlert fumbled an exchange from under center, Shelly had a 36-yard run to set Fear up for his second short score.

“Logan played with everything like he always does,” Tighe said. “And Charlie gave us some good runs when he was able to get outside. He has speed and we need for him to use it a little bit more.

“But like I said, he’s one of those young kids that are still learning how to play varsity football. It’s a challenge, and one they have all had to learn on the fly.”

Hartley-HMS and Wohlert put together an impressive 13-play drive that covered over 60 yards and took four-plus minutes off the block. They converted two third-down tries and a fourth-and-7 when Wohlert found Norman Schirmer for a first down.

The Gael defense forced four turnovers on the night, including an interception by Shelly. Sean Newell, Tyler McCarville and Jake Rossow all recovered fumbles.

St. Edmond returns home next Friday to take on North Union (2-4, 1-3), a 26-14 winner over MMCRU, at Dodger Stadium.
