Winterset rallies late to advance
It’s not very often that Winterset finds itself in a hole late in games — especially at the state softball tournament.
On Tuesday, though, the Huskies needed to overcome a 4-3 deficit vs Oskaloosa.
They did, plating four in the bottom of the sixth to advance to the Class 4A semifinals and a date with Boone Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
Winterset (35-7 overall), the defending state champions, were led by a two-RBI triple from No. 9 hitter Thea Banning. Riley Kious and Bailey Acton each drove in a run.
Banning, a junior, controlled things inside the circle, striking out five without issuing a walk.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Winterset plated two runs to take the lead. They added a third run in the second before Oskaloosa made it 3-2 after three.
In the fifth, the Indians took the lead, scoring twice to go up 4-3. Presley Blommers was 2-for-2 with three RBI including a double and Abby Braundmeier had an RBI.
Olivia Gordon had three hits and Maleah Walker scored three runs for Oskaloosa, who was making its first trip to state since 2014. The Indians meet Carlisle in the consolation round Wednesday at 11:30 a.m.
