Wayne got its breakthrough game at the state softball tournament on Monday.

The second-seeded Lady Falcons are making their third straight trip to Rogers Park after coming up empty the past two seasons.

On Monday, Wayne (24-4 overall) used an 11-hit performance and 11 strikeout outing from Sterling Berndt to turn back Remsen St. Mary’s 7-2 in a 1A quarterfinal contest.

The Lady Falcons will now play third-seed Lisbon (36-8) who beat Clarksville 10-0 in their opener. The semifinal contest will be Wednesday on Kruger Seeds Field (Diamond 1). First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

Berndt (20-3), a member of the all-tournament team as a freshman in 2019, struck out 11 batters.

“It means the world to get to the semifinals,” Brendt said. “All the offseason work and time we put into this is paying off.

“We work so much with pressure situations that we can execute them and pull through when we need to.”

Jaide Harvey, Mya Willey, Emily Jones and Abigayle Henderson had two hits each for the Lady Falcons.

“The win meant a whole bunch to us girls,” Henderson said. “It feels amazing to get past the first round and make it to the semifinals.

“We executed in pressure situations like we are supposed to and we have prepared the whole season for it.”

Wayne took a 3-0 lead after two innings. Jones started the scoring with an RBI-double to plate Willey. Camryn Jacobsen followed with an RBI-single, scoring Jones.

In the second inning Harvey had an RBI-single to plate Berndt.

The Hawks cut the deficit to 3-2 with a two-run fifth inning. Claire Schroeder scored on a sacrifice from Mya Bunkers. Ana Conover then had an RBI-single which Bunkers scored.

The Lady Falcons followed with two in the fifth and two in the sixth. Jones had an RBI-single in the fifth, and Willey ended the scoring with a two-run double.
