Waukee fights off defending champs

Defending state champion Cedar Rapids Kennedy nearly had a rematch of last year’s state finals in the semifinals, but Waukee walked off for a spot against Fort Dodge.

The Warriors (33-10 overall) scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to out last the Cougars (17-10) 9-8 in a 5A quarterfinal on Tuesday night.

With two outs Lily Chiafos delivered a two-RBI single to plate Ella Parker and Ella McGee for the winning runs.

With Waukee leading 7-6 heading into the seventh, Kennedy scored two runs on an RBI-single from Alexis Wheatley to score Sidney Osborn and a sacrifice fly from Megan Cousins that Topanga Beauregard scored on.

Reagan Bartholomew was 3-for-4 with two runs for Waukee, including a double. Parker had three hits, including a triple and two RBI. Haley Boyd and Claire Fossell had two hits.

The Cougars had four doubles, two coming from KEaton Gerber who had two runs and drove in four runs. Beauregard and Cousins also had doubles.

Addie Parker had two hits.

Maddie Oetzmann got the win for Waukee. She allowed eight hits, while walking five and striking out seven batters.
