The message from Pleasant Valley’s Reagan Hassel was simple: just do it.

Hassel, a sophomore, scored the game-winning run to finish a wild 11-10 victory over Southeast Polk that saw the Spartans see an eight-run lead evaporate.

Pleasant Valley (34-7 overall) will face Ankeny Centennial in the Class 5A semifinals on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

“Just do whatever you can,” Hassel said. “If you had an error in the field, use that fire at your at-bat. We just had to have confidence that we could do it.”

The Spartans led 2-0 after the first and added six more in the second to seemingly can control. Southeast Polk, who knocked off Johnston to qualify for state for the first time since 2014, answered with two in the third.

Down 10-2 after two more Pleasant Valley runs in the third, the Rams went on the attack. They scored three in the fourth, three more in the fifth and tied it with two in the sixth.

In the seventh, Hassel singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Jessi Clemons. After Emily Wood was walked, Sophia Lindquist delivered a base hit that scored Hassel.

“I knew I was going home as soon as Sophia hit it,” Hassel said. “I was going to make it happen.”

Hassel was 4-for-4, scoring three runs, Lindquist drove in three and Jessi Meyer had five RBI, including a grand slam for Pleasant Valley.

Southeast Polk (21-19) will play Iowa City High in the consolation round Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Abbi Cataldo was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs, Grace McGrane was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, and Ellie Snetselaar drove in two.
