Winterset advances, 7-4

Jena Young has a bright future in front of her, and the present isn’t too shabby either.

Winterset’s freshman lead-off hitter set the tone Monday afternoon with a double on the second pitch of the Huskies’ Class 4A state quarterfinal against West Delaware, and she finished 3 for 3 with two runs scored and one RBI to help her team down the Hawks, 7-4, on Dodger Diamond inside the Rogers Sports Complex.

Winterset (15-7), ranked 10th, pulled off the upset over No. 2-ranked West Delaware (21-5) by owning the early innings and reeling off 13 hits. The Huskies led 7-1 after three innings and then fended off a three-run rally, all with two outs, by the Hawks in the last half of the seventh.

Thea Banning joined Young with three hits; the two combined to lash three doubles. Natalie Drake ripped a single and double, and drove in two runs. Ava Lowden delivered an early haymaker with a two-run home run, part of Winterset’s five-run second frame.

Young, who entered the contest hitting a team-best .595, connected for her second double in the second inning when Winterset roughed up West Delaware hurler Macey Kleitsch for five hits. Briley Acton also found the gap for a double in the frame.

Banning laced an RBI double in the third to extend Winterset’s edge to 7-1.

West Delaware connected for seven hits, three of them courtesy of Alissa Holtz. Mia Peyton smacked a two-RBI single in the seventh inning.

Banning earned the win in the circle for the Huskies. She stuck out three and walked one.

Winterset, in the state tournament field for the first time since it won a 4A title in 2014, advanced to Wednesday’s semifinal round where it will face eighth-ranked Dallas Center-Grimes (20-9).

The two teams met once in the regular season, a contest that went DC-G’s way, 9-4, on July 9.
