Dallas Center-Grimes ends Fairfield’s long streak

Third-ranked Fairfield entered Monday’s Class 4A state quarterfinal round riding a 22-game win streak.

No. 8 Dallas Center-Grimes made sure it didn’t reach 23.

Backed by a four-run third inning, DC-G took control and never trailed over the final four frames, as it handed Fairfield its first loss since June 16, 7-5, on Veterans Diamond inside the Rogers Sports Complex.

The Fillies (20-9), in the state tournament field for the third straight year and 10th time in school history, advanced to Wednesday’s semifinals where they will tangle with 10th-ranked Winterset. DC-G handed Winterset a 9-4 loss during the regular season earlier this month.

Fairfield (24-2) out-hit DC-G, 7-5, and had a pair of extra base hits to just one for the Fillies. But the Hawks also committed the game’s only error, which led to a pair of unearned runs.

Molly Cooney went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs for DC-G. Kamryn O’Brien roped a single that plated two runs, while three others — Aubrey Johansen, Kylie Merical and Morgan Rosenbeck — had one hit each.

Hannah Simpson led Fairfield’s offense with two hits, one of them a double, and two RBIs.

Trailing 6-2 entering the last half of the fifth inning, Fairfield plated three runs to close the gap to one run. DC-G added an insurance run in the sixth, and then Grand View University pitching recruit Lani Gannon slammed the door on Fairfield in the sixth and seventh innings.

Riley Hall picked up the win in the circle. She went 3 2/3 innings for DC-G and fanned three before handing the ball over to Gannon, who went 3 1/3 and struck out two.
