Golden Bears win ranked contest

ALGONA — Third-ranked Bishop Garrigan did enough in the first half to hold off No. 4 Belmond-Klemme in the second half on Friday night.

The Golden Bears (6-0 overall, 2-0, Class A, District 3) beat the Broncos, 22-20.

“This was really big for us,” said Bishop Garrigan head coach Marty Wadle. “We played really good defensively and stepped it up in the fourth quarter.

“We were able to do a couple of things, but when they scored before half, that gave them some momentum. They changed a few things (in the second half) and we did what we had to do.”

Bishop Garrigan built a 22-7 lead, but gave up a touchdown right before half, going into the locker room with a 22-13 advantage.

The Broncos (5-1, 1-1) held the Broncos scoreless in the second half, and only tackdown on a score in the third quarter.

Preston Kohlhaas had rushing touchdowns of 40 and 15 yards, while Brad Capesius added on a four touchdown run.

Kohlhaas and T.J. Schnurr had two-point conversion runs.

Kohlhaas led the Golden Bears on the ground, rushing for 108 yards on 17 carries. Capesius had 68 yards on 12 carries and was 7-for-10 passing for 87 yards.

Schnurr caught four balls for 64 yards.

Titans hold on to move to 6-0

JEWELL — Fourth-ranked South Central Calhoun held off South Hamilton for a 14-8 victory on Friday night.

The Titans (6-0 overall, 3-0 district) had two rushing touchdowns against the Hawks (4-2, 1-1). Landon Schleisman and Brennan Holder had one-yard rushing touchdowns eac.

Schleisman finished with 69 yards on 14 caries and Cole McAlister had 63 yards on 10 carries.

Cole Corey was 7-for-17 passing for 96 yards.

Steen runs for 204, 4 TDs

WEBSTER CITY — Dylan Steen was about to let Webster City’s skid hit three games.

The senior running back was a groundhog on Friday night as the Lynx (3-3 overall, 1-1 district) beat Perry 42-14.

Steen rushed for 204 yards on 38 carries and four touchdowns. He had scoring runs of one, two, five and 40 yards.

Drake Doolittle (30 yards) and Trace Kepler (nine) had scoring runs as well.

Doolittle finished the night with 110 yards on 12 carries.

Webster City had 396 yards of offense and 343 on the ground.

Heinz’s big night lifts Humboldt

GRIMES — The Humboldt football team posted a 28-6 victory over Dallas Center-Grimes here on Friday.

Jamison Heinz returned both a kick and a punt return for a touchdown to help the Wildcats (2-4 overall). Heinz took the kick 88 yards to the end zone, and the punt 62 yards to paydirt.

Tyler Vitzthum rushed 24 times for 118 yards against the Mustangs (1-5). Joey Busse completed 8 of 10 passes for 82 yards and a pair of scores.

Heinz and Matt Miller led the defense with eight tackles each. Humboldt gave up only 167 yards of total offense in the victory.

Cougars lose to Wolves

MANNING — Manson Northwest played with IKM-Manning in the first half, but the Wolves outscored the Cougars 25-0 in the second half to earn a 39-8 victory.

Derek Girard led the Cougars (0-6 overall, 0-2 district) with 112 yards passing and an eight-yard touchdown pass to Riley Peters. Girard was 12-for-12 in the contest.

Peters had 66 yards on 16 carries and was 1-for-1 passing for 34 yeards. Dawson Estergaard caught two balls for 65 yards.

No. 4 Ar-We-Va rolls past No. 6 Mustangs

NEWELL — In a ranked eight-man showdown, it was No. 4 Ar-We-Va who topped No. 6 Newell-Fonda 47-14 on Friday night.

Bryce Coppock led the Mustangs (5-1 overall, 3-1 district) with both touchdowns. Coppock threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Damon Bartek and rolled 41 yards on the ground for a score.

Coppock finished with 152 rushing yards on 28 carries.
