SE Valley gets back on track

GOWRIE — Hunter Kruse passed for 203 yards and tossed three touchdowns as Southeast Valley picked up a 36-13 victory over Clarion-Goldfield/Dows here Friday night.

Kruse was 11-for-15 passing, finding Nyles Johnson, Kyler Fisher and Chase Swieter on scoring strikes.

Johnson also had a 51-yard punt return for a touchdown, with Fisher adding a rushing score. Fisher had 80 yards on 14 carries for the Jaguars (3-2, 1-0).

For the Cowboys (2-3, 0-1), Jaace Weidemann had a 43-yard run for a touchdown and hit Mateo Martinez for a TD.

Bears top West Hancock

BRITT — The third-ranked (Class A) Bishop Garrigan football team gained a matter of redemption here Friday night, besting No. 10 West Hancock, 28-14.

Last year, the Golden Bears (5-0, 1-0) were ousted from the postseason by their rivals. In 2016, they earned a win in the playoffs vs. West Hancock (3-2, 0-1) on the way to finishing second overall.

“It was a good win for the kids,” Bishop Garrigan head coach Marty Wadle said. “We haven’t beat Coach (Bob Sanger) a lot, so this one felt good.”

Brad Capesius, who is now 26-2 as a starter for BGHS, threw two touchdowns and ran in a third. Preston Kohlhaas had the fourth score. Capesius has accounted for 44 touchdowns through the air and on the ground in his career.

Bishop Garrigan has now won 32 consecutive regular season games. The last loss in the regular season by the Golden Bears came on Oct. 24, 2014 on this very field to West Hancock, 28-6.

Leading the way for the Garrigan defense was John Capesius and Cade Winkel, who each made 10 tackles. Eric Thul, Alex Mammen and Sam Vaske had nine stops each, with Aiden Koob recording six and two sacks.

Tate Hagen ran for 183 yards and Gavin Becker hit Caleb Eckels for a pair of scoring strikes to lead the Eagles.

Lynx tripped up on the road

CARROLL — The Webster City football team was downed by Carroll here Friday night, 28-14.

Dylan Steen had two interceptions on defense, returning one 96 yards for a touchdown. Steen now has 19 career picks, which places him 10th on the state’s all-time list.

Trace Kepler had a 24-yard touchdown run, leading the Lynx (2-3, 0-1) with 54 yards on the ground.

Cougars lose to Alta/Aurelia

MANSON — The Manson Northwest Webster football team suffered a 26-8 loss to Alta/Aurelia here Friday night.

Derek Girard hit Dawson Estergaard with a 9-yard scoring strike for the lone touchdown for the Cougars (0-5, 0-1).

Girard was 9-for-13 passing for 61 yards, Brayden Johll ran for 41 yards and Riley Peters added 30 yards.

Humboldt loses to Boone, 10-0

HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt football team dropped a 10-0 decision to Boone here Friday night.

Lucas Volf had 10 tackles and a sack and Matt Miller had nine tackles, two for loss to lead the Wildcats (1-4, 0-1).

Tyler Casotti scored the lone touchdown for Boone (3-2, 1-0).
